Why Wood Aren’t As Bad As You Think

A Guide to Wood Science

Wood science is the study of wood as a material that is renewable and of biological origin. The processes and the tools used to utilize the material is what is known as wood technology. Other products are put alongside wood for easy testing and study. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. The many Merits of timber and these technologies improve wood to be superior over other products. Wood can be applied in very many applications, and this gives it an upper hand over other materials. Wood is renewable, and this makes it more precious. The other merit is that a part of the harvested material is at the same time used as energy to produce the product.

Protection of wooden structure and products is a must if you want to keep the good looks in place. Wooden structures have to be kept away from water and pests that eat through the wood. The water particles in the timber increase the rotting and the insects bore through the wood. There are many ways timber is treated among them being the ACQ in other words alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. There are a few disadvantages of this method as a mode of wood preservation. The chemical is highly corrosive to most metals, the chemical corrodes away galvanized fasteners and therefore only stainless steel is used. The species of the wood and the application of the wood will determine how many chemicals will be used on the wood. Timber being used around a water body will be dipped in a more saturated fluid than that being used above ground.

The use of copper metal is another method of wood treatment that is fast being accepted. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. This process is what in other words called the micronized copper wood preservative. In this process microscopic particles of solid copper metal are mixed in a liquid carrier and injected to the wood at high pressure. In other copper-based preservation methods copper is dissolved in chemicals while in this method copper is driven into the wood as a metal. The characteristics of the wood are highly improved and the when this process is used to treat wood. The timber treated in this way is used in both outdoor and indoor frames that last very long.

Termites and fungal decay are just a few among the many problems wood treated from this method are protected against. It has also shown to be an improvement in corrosion resistant properties to metal fasteners. Extensive research over a period of 10 years has proven the effectiveness of this science as one of the best wood preservation methods.
